2 Common Signs That Exhausts & Mufflers Are Starting to Wear Out

The exhausts & mufflers on our vehicles do a lot of work. They also will break down sometimes, seemingly without warning. But how do you know that your muffler or exhaust needs to be replaced? Here are two signs that exhausts & mufflers will give you that they need to have repair or replacement work done soon.

A Lot of Exhaust/Engine Noise

Probably the biggest sign that you have problems is a lot of noise. Your muffler could be rusted, your pipe could be cracked, or your manifold gasket could be leaking. If the system was compromised, there would be a lot of noise.

Reduction in Fuel Economy

Another sign that you have problems with your exhaust system is that you have to fill up your tank more often. However, this can happen for a variety of reasons as well, so it’s not always a problem with the exhaust or muffler. That being said, if you notice a lot of noise and your gas tank is emptying a lot sooner than it used to, it’s probably your exhaust system because the engine’s working a lot harder, burning much more fuel.

These are two signs that exhausts & mufflers give when they are starting to have problems. If you are noticing either of these problems, it’s a good idea to make an appointment with a mechanic to have your system looked at. Otherwise, you may have more problems to deal with. The car mechanic will be able to do a proper assessment and give you suitable recommendations.
