What Electricians Want You to Know Before Purchasing a Home

As you search for the perfect new home, you likely have several must-haves and wants, like making sure there are enough bedrooms, a kitchen that fits your needs, and plenty of storage space; but equally important is the condition of the home. When you’ve found a home that seems to check all the boxes and you want to move forward with a purchase, you will order a home inspection. We suggest you also consider an electrical inspection by a licensed electrician.

An electrical inspection can tell you if the home is up to code and can expose any electrical issues the home may have. Among other things, during the inspection, your electrician will:

  • Examine the service panel (also known as a fuse box) for loose wires and making sure wires are the right gauge and breakers are the right size
  • Check the voltage and ground wire of the outlets
  • Inspect the overcurrent protective devices
  • Examine the type of wiring, ensuring that it is up to date and noting if anything is exposed or loose

With the information gathered from your electrical inspection, you will know if your home is safe and also know if there are any needed repairs. Some electrical repairs are inexpensive and can be easily remedied. Other repairs may be more costly and something you’ll want to consider before you move forward with the purchase and price negotiations of your new home.

If you’re ready to purchase a home, call a local licensed electrician to schedule an electrical inspection.
